confederate
i noticed a few confederate battle flags on my drive through the backwoods of kentucky today. i realize the commonwealth was a slave state and a confederate sympathizer, but for pete’s sake, kentucky remained in the union.

country
whenever i’m on the road for work i stay in a hampton inn. the prices are decent, there’s free albeit crappy breakfast and each room in every hotel is furnished exactly the same, which means you know exactly what you’re going to get. as part of the standard room furnishings there’s a clock radio that has buttons labeled ‘talk,’ ‘rock,’...

americana
if a pub in ireland has american beer on tap - and the ones in the bigger towns always do - it’s bud heavy followed by coors light and miller genuine draft. the bar bands LOVE johnny cash too. we’ve heard ‘folsom prison blues’ at least three times.

insomnia
the bartenders here in Ireland are masters of their trade. i appreciate and marvel at what they do until their drunken charges keep me awake into the wee hours of the morning with their chants and bar songs.

good things
the public toilets in Dublin are consistently decent. I’ve sampled quite a few of them today. the people are perhaps the nicest in the world.

Aer Lingus
it often takes one bad customer service experience for me to hate a company, but Aer Lingus managed to make me love it with one amazing experience. i should note that it’s been more than a decade since my only previous transatlantic flight, but based on my continental experiences with domestic carriers, i’m gonna guess they’re not all this good.
here’s how the green-tipped plane won me over … 1....

wedding dress
driving across tennessee with my wedding dress in tow reminds me of a trip i took with friends to oxford, ohio in 2007 for a friend’s wedding. i rode up from nashville with two guy friends, and we watched borat on a laptop. the wedding was at the university of miami, ohio, where the bride and groom went to school. after a lovely afternoon wedding we pub crawled hard into the wee hours of the...

incommunicado
i spent about 20 minutes yesterday printing out hotel and bed and breakfast confirmations and google maps for our ireland trip — a task that should have only taken about five minutes. the extra time was spent trying to figure out physical locations of all our accommodations. hard and fast addresses in ireland don’t appear to exist outside of dublin, and even dublin’s street...

starting over, again
i’ve been on the road a lot lately and noticing that i always have thoughts when i’m traveling that i’d like to record. and what do you know, there’s an app for that.
so i’m starting the tumblr over again, this time with my witticisms and wisdom from the road, and maybe a few photos thrown in for good measure. i’ll probaby write posts in real time about my...

first things, first
we met thanks to the wedding a mutual friend (thanks, chriswork!) and reconnected on the dance floor of our favorite hole-in-the wall bar in knoxville, sassy ann’s. we got to know each other thanks to a mutual love of eating, hanging out with our dogs playing scrabble and being homebodies.
we were walking our dogs together at sequoyah hills park, right along the tennessee river, and talking...
we're getting married!
but more on that later.
